COD: Black Ops suffering from lag and performance issues

Call of Duty: Black Ops has had a huge launch and met with critical acclaim, but all is not well with the game. It turns out that players are seeing lag and some other serious problems, including very high CPU
loads which prevent the game from playing properly on PCs.

From the start I’ll say this: I put in about two hours on the PC version last night and had no problems. The single player worked great and while the multiplayer had some lag and rather high pings, it wasn’t enough to prevent me from playing. Reports around the web are prevalent enough that it’s clear problems exist, even if I can’t personally speak to them.

Kotaku discovered a forum response from a Treyarch employee staying that “the PC server browser was crushing the back-end”. We also have confirmation that the issue(s) is/are known and they are being addressed.

So if you are having problems, don’t worry, you’re not the only one.

We’re seeing performance fixes pop up around the web but if there are problems with the multiplayer backend those won’t help. At the very least maybe these will help people get through the single player campaign. Some of the fixes seem a bit dubious though, so read up before you start hacking away.

The Steam forums are generally the best place to turn when this happens, and this time is no different. There are a number of threads up on the problems, with the summary being that there are a number of glitches with the PC version and people aren’t too happy. That said, this is a huge release so even if bugs are only affecting a small percentage of users the outcry will seem widespread.

As it happens so often, users might just have to wait a few days for a patch to be released and things to finally work properly. It might not seem like a big deal to you, but if you took the time to pre-order and then pre-load what will probably be the biggest FPS game of the year, it could come as a serious disappointment.

Mulve – The Nightmare-Scenario Music Downloading Tool

September 24, 2010

As pressure on file-sharing continues to mount, many people are searching for ‘safer’ methods to acquire music. Today we bring news of an application that seems to be almost too good to be true. With a huge database of songs, Mulve delivers music to users’ desktops at amazing speeds at the touch of a button with zero uploading, meaning that “getting caught” is no longer a concern. Question is, how long will it last?

mulveWhile TorrentFreak is naturally a site that reports on file-sharing issues and software, sometimes a new product will come along that involves no sharing at all and is simply too impressive to ignore. Just pure, unadulterated music downloading.

This particular application, called Mulve, comes in a package of just 2mb and once unzipped reveals two files, the installer itself and a text file on how to donate to the project.

Of course, people tend to panic that this type of software may contain some sort of virus or malware, but Mulve seems to be clean. The results of 43 virus scanners show that only two feel that the file may be suspicious, which seems to suggest a false positive on their behalf. For the purposes of a review, we’ll take a chance….

So what is Mulve? Here are its creators describing their product:

Originating from computer adept backgrounds, two guys, both musicians, met one day. After a drink, it was final, they decided to start developing a program like no other, something that would allow people to find a tune they wanted, no slower than a click of a button.

Mulve, is just that program. After years of development we wanted to bring you something that you would enjoy loading up, something that was not for personal gain or for money. Something that could run flawlessly without so much as a momentary hiccup. Something that would prove to be a monumental breakthrough in terms of music discovery.

Big claims like these are hard to live up to, but we’ve tested Mulve and it delivers – with style.

The software requires no further installation once unpacked and runs directly from the 1.9mb .exe file. Once running the user simply enters a search – below we’ve shown a couple of the results available for songs by Dan Bull of ‘Dear Lily’ and ‘Dear Mandy’ fame (because he’s a cool guy and a friend of ours).

Rest assured though, searches for just about any song brings up a wealth of results and in many cases lead to high quality MP3s, right up to 320kbs.

MulveDanBull

Download speeds are very impressive too. There’s hardly any time to max out your connection with a download since transfers are over so quickly. It doesn’t really get much better than that.

So what’s the deal here, from a file-sharing perspective?

Well, Mulve is not a shared-folder type application like LimeWire and it isn’t based around BitTorrent. It isn’t a Google-search type application pulling MP3s off open directories on websites either. In fact, there is absolutely no sharing at all and files seem to come straight from servers designed for the job.

This means that users downloading with Mulve cannot be tracked by anti-P2P companies since they are doing no uploading. If it continues, a nightmare scenario for the music industry.

Too good to be true? At this stage it’s hard to tell. However, FileShareFreak has been in touch with the creators of Mulve and asked them where their application is pulling music from – here is their response:

Without giving too much away, I can tell you that we are obviously not a P2P client and in fact we don’t search open FTPs. Instead we directly connect to a few other servers overseas which store the music. Unfortunately, I cannot reveal which these are.

Earlier, TorrentFreak carried out some tests of our own using Wireshark on half a dozen randomly selected tracks. On those it appeared that the music was coming from Russian servers connected to Vkontakte, a huge social networking site.

Other music could originate from elsewhere but with an alleged 10 million tracks to test, it could be a big task to find out.

Mulve appears to be operating on a donate basis at the moment and currently has a target of just $500. It is also selling advertising space.

The program itself looks very basic but when getting music becomes this easy, will anyone care? Probably not.

Nevertheless, Mulve really does seem to be too good to be true and with that in mind, we’re still watching with caution. Let’s see what it turns into in future – if it has one.

Inside Yesterday’s European Warez Piracy Raids | TorrentFreak

Yesterday, police in 14 countries around Europe coordinated in raids against so-called Warez Scene topsites. Sweden, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Great Britain, Czech Republic and Hungary all saw action. With the help of Scene insiders and other sources, today we try to piece together what happened, including which sites were hit and which ones got away.

Twenty-four hours ago brought the news that a huge police operation right across Europe had reached its climax.

Officers in 14 countries coordinated to carry out multiple searches in an attempt to inflict serious damage on the so-called Warez Scene, the shadowy network of Internet based servers and individuals who deal in large quantities of pirated music, movies and software.

Yesterday nearly all information had come from either the authorities, police or staff at datacenters, notably Sweden’s PRQ, but since then TorrentFreak sources with varying levels of inside information have been trying to put us in the picture.

So, keeping in mind that reporting on the Scene is a black art, that we’ve had to hold some information back to protect certain individuals and keep our sources happy, and redact here and there to protect others, here are our findings thus far.

“In pretty much all of the cases the police just walked into the datacenters, proceeded with warrants, more or less unplugged the boxes and left with them,” one source told us. “They knew very well exactly what they were looking for and this was a highly coordinated attack.”

While there were reports of individuals having been taken in for questioning yesterday, for an operation of this size those numbers seem unusually low. This is due to the operation targeting only ‘topsites’ – no specific release groups or their members appear to have been the focus of the action. It’s believed that some siteops weren’t so lucky.

We know that the raids were carried out at the behest of the Belgian authorities and two sources have told us that it is suspected that a Scene group in Belgium had been infiltrated a long time ago. Indeed, the authorities over there say that this operation had been two years in the making.

Another source is pointing the finger squarely at a siteop with poor security, but whatever the reasons, these sites are now in disarray.

As of last night, all the following Scene sites were down either because they were successfully targeted in the raids or as a precautionary measure. The first three are said to be very highly ranked and three of the top four were almost certainly busted.

1. BAR – Sweden.

2. LOST – Czech Republic

3. [name redacted] – major site in The Netherlands

4. SC – Sweden

5. [name redacted] Affiliated site in Eastern Europe believed safe, but down.

6. [porn section of a sitering, redacted] – Sweden

Based on the information we’re being provided with, certain sites probably survived due to the techniques they employed to thwart this kind of an attack. In other cases perhaps the police didn’t quite get it right. We can’t be more specific.

Sources inform TorrentFreak that Sweden’s BAR was one of the four most important 0day sites. Since it went down yesterday, another significant southern European site in that top four has announced it has closed its operations for good.

In respect of the Czech operation, Jan Podhajsky of the Czech Pirate Party told us that a raid was carried out on a dormitory at the Czech Technical University in Prague. This is not the first time police have carried out an operation in this location – Podhajsky told us that raids against hackers have been going on there since the late 90s.

It seems that the impact of this large, Europe-wide operation will be significant, at least for the near future.

“Many groups and especially server operators are once again scared shitless,” a source told us. “We can probably expect more ‘resignations’ in the following days.”

Update: We’ve received information which suggests that a topsite, possibly the main one in the UK, was busted yesterday. There are unconfirmed reports that another is also down, but that could be just as a precaution. Two Scene groups have been reported to us as badly affected by the topsite raids but until we can confirm, we won’t be naming them.

A Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta hasn’t been announced yet but sculling around on the official Call of Duty: Black Ops website today, we stumbled upon a little tease that suggests it’s not far away. Read on for the results of our digging about the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta…

Head to the Call of Duty website, choose to sign up for a free user account and you’ll get a list of reasons it’s worth your while to register. Sixth on the list is this: “First-in-the-world access to REDACTED – you are not yet cleared for this information.”

That’s hardly the Enigma code is it? Treyarch released a multiplayer beta for its last Call of Duty outing, Call of Duty: World At War, so doing the same for Call of Duty: Black Ops seems like a safe bet.

Trudging through the Twitter feed of Treyarch’s community manager Josh Olin also suggests the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta is in the works. Back in June, he confirmed that “an MP BETA is being considered” while last week he warned followers to avoid fake Call of Duty: Black Ops beta keys saying: “There’s no way to play yet…”

While we’re waiting for confirmation that the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer is incoming at least we know zombies are definitely shambling our way.

COD 7 Black Ops Dedicated Servers:

Some fantastic news for PC gamers now, as it has been confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops title will have support for dedicated servers, unlike the previous CoD title on PC.

As reported from MTV, Treyarch boss Mark Lamia confirmed the news in a recent interview with CVG. In a statement which is sure to delight PC owners, he had this to say:

“I don’t see any reason not to see them unless… well, I just don’t see any reason not to.”. He also continued to go into specifics on the dedicated servers by adding: “We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides. ”

It seems as if Treyarch doesn’t fancy a PC backlash like Infinity Ward received when they decided not to use dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2. Smart move we think.

Let us know your thoughts on this. Are you happy with the news or not?
